‘This is It,’ or is it?
This is it. This is the moment so many people have been waiting for since they heard the King of Pop passed away on June 25 — the chance to see him in action again, to view his final days arrived last week. In the recently released documentary, concertgoers who had purchased tickets to Michael Jackson’s “This is It” world tour, along with millions of other Michael Jackson fans, were able to see footage chronicling his rehearsals between April and June 2009.
“This is It” was created from more than 100 hours of footage, and I think most fans would have been happy to sit through all 100 hours of footage, as opposed to the two hours and one minutes it was condensed into.
Trailers and movie posters promised audiences a glimpse at Jackson, “like you’ve never seen him before.” They made good on their promises, enthralling audiences with vibrant music, memorable dance moves, and a glimpse into the last days of Jackson’s life. As much as we all like to think we are above it, it is fascinating to entertain ideas of dark last days. But “This is It” doesn’t encourage those ideas. It focuses on what made Michael Jackson so famous to begin with — his skills as an entertainer. The film proves that Jackson was able to accomplish what he was trying so hard to accomplish — a comeback. Everything he did throughout his life was intriguing, and this documentary is no different. He proves he would have been big had he lived to perform his concerts, and he proved he will still big, even from the grave.
So often, posthumous documentaries can be dry and dull, but “This is It” made me feel like I was as close to Jackson’s concerts as I would ever be. The film was originally scheduled to run for a limited, two-week engagement, but has been extended to run through Thanksgiving.
Something tells me this won’t be the last time we get to see the King of Pop in action though. According to Forbes, Jackson is the third-largest dead celebrity earner this year, having made a cool $90 million since passing away. I can only expect that there will be more Michael Jackson to come — more music, more videos, more Michael.
