Mayday Parade released a new album titled Anywhere But Here last Tuesday, Oct. 6. They are an alternative band that just I listened to for the first time and am pleased. Since this is their first album I have listened to, I was curious to know how this compared to their previous albums. If you have been a fan for years, you may be surprised that their sound has transitioned to be more alternative than pop from their last album, A Lesson In Romantics. But I would argue that Anywhere But Here is a CD worth purchasing. Granted, I’m a little biased and prefer alternative music above most.
The first few times I listened to the CD, I was driving in the car. At first it was just a subtle head-bob because I was unfamiliar with the lyrics and rhythms. But then I heard “Get Up,” and I felt like I was always playing this song on repeat until I knew all the words and was guilty of full out car dancing.
The whole album is ear catching, but each song has a different sound and feel from the last by really trying to reach out to new audiences. On that note, I have a few favorites on the album, but “I Swear This Time I Mean It” gets me because I’m a girl who easily swoons at the sound of a romantic gesture being strummed on the guitar. Nonetheless, it seems though this album offers a broad spectrum of music that plays between different genres and fans. “We really just wanted to follow our own path on this record and not worry about if we fit in anywhere,” Jake Bundrick, the drummer from Tennessee, said in their band bio.

Working with producer David Bendeth, who made Paramore and Underoath popular, gave the band new structure and depth to the record. He helped them capture the energy of their music. They feel as though they have grown and extended past the expectations that their previous album generated.

Overall, I’m happy to have been introduced to Mayday Parade. Their new album is definitely an addition that I don’t have to worry will offend any company because it’s fun and diverse. And as for myself, it satisfies a such a range of moods that I find myself taking more long drives.
